Housing Equity Withdrawal (HEW) was negative again at -£3.2bn in 2010 Quarter 1, continuing the recent trend for homeowners to invest more cash into their own homes.
Latest statistics released by the Bank of England show that HEW was still negative at -£3.2bn in Q1 2010, although slightly less negative than the Q4 2009 figure of -£3.4bn (revised up from the previous published figure of -£4.0bn).
Since Q2 2008, individuals have injected £38.3bn into housing equity, which was when the HEW measure turned negative.
HEW as a percentage of post-tax income was also slightly less negative than the previous quarter, at -1.3% compared to -1.4% in Q4 2009 (up from the previously published -1.6%).
